## How it works

### What an elite program is

The elite programs are special tracks within the academic reserve (atuda): students study for a degree right after high school, in a small group with a director dedicated to the program, and after the studies they serve as officers in research and development, engineering or medicine. Below are the programs from the official atuda booklet for the 2027–2028 academic year.

Service after the studies, according to the booklet’s rule: compulsory service by law as officers (the same for women as for men) and three more years of career service (keva) — unless a track states otherwise.

### Money

Every atuda cadet receives an atuda incentive grant of ₪10,500 in each academic year, as long as he or she keeps up with the required pace of accumulating credit points and with an average of 75 or above. Most programs add a grant of their own — the amount appears under each program. Those accepted to a track also receive a one-time grant of ₪2,500 to cover the cost of registering for the psychometric exam and for institutions.

The excellence grant of ₪5,000 (an annual average of 90 or above, the “Hundred Club”) is not given to participants in the programs on this page — the booklet lists them by name.

### Registration and schedule

- Register through the atuda questionnaire in the personal area of the “Mitgaisim” website (the IDF draft website) — from July 2026 until 28.02.2027. The program is marked in the same questionnaire.

- Psychometric exam: the last sitting is in April 2027; the booklet recommends taking it by December 2026.

- Personal screenings and screening days dedicated to the programs — December to June; the atuda admissions committee — September 2027; studies begin in October 2027.

### If not accepted

Registering for an elite program does not harm other screenings in the IDF. Someone who is not accepted to a program continues in the regular atuda process, according to the order of priorities he or she chose. In some programs (for example Psagot), someone who does not meet the required level during the studies continues in the regular atuda framework.

### What you study and where

An excellence program that trains engineers for the core of research and development in the IDF and the defense establishment. Two tracks:

- Electrical engineering and physics — a combined bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and physics, at the Technion or Tel Aviv University, with a heavier study load than a regular engineering degree.

- Enhanced software engineering — a bachelor’s degree in software engineering at the Technion or Ben-Gurion University, plus most of the courses of a master’s degree in computer science (without the thesis). Leading candidates may take one additional semester to complete the thesis, with deferral of service.

### Selection

- A first selection committee chooses from among those registered for the atuda according to military data and the psychometric score; someone who is going to take the psychometric exam in the April sitting can register.

- A second committee — according to the personal screening: suitability for the demanding studies and training and for the service.

- Admission to the university according to the bagrut (matriculation certificate) and the psychometric, and at the end a final selection committee.

### Training and service

During the studies — unique series: heritage and values, the IDF and its challenges, an introduction to the technology bodies; the officers’ course is part of the program. Placement is personal, in the core of research and development. The program is run by a dedicated director at MAFAT (the Defense Ministry’s research and development directorate). Someone who does not meet the required level continues in the regular atuda.

- Bar-Ilan University

A bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering, with specializations in signal processing, RF, communications and firmware — at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and Bar-Ilan University. Full funding of the master’s degree; for those who meet the requirements — a possible scholarship in return for research hours.

After a check of the personal data and the psychometric score, candidates are invited to the rest of the screening — from April to August. Admission depends on admission to the university, on the quota of research and development roles and on an IDF admissions committee. Someone who is not accepted continues in the atuda according to the priorities he or she chose.

Basic training of about four weeks after the first year, a personal development series after the second, the Leaders entrepreneurship program in the third year and a branches series after the fourth; going on to the officers’ course is encouraged. Personal placement in research and development roles; service as an officer — compulsory service and three years of career service (keva).
