## Before the day: date, assignment, messages

The enlistment date and the assignment, if already set, appear in the personal account on the mitgaisim.idf.il site. In the official “Mitgaisim” app you can also keep track of your personal data and get reminders about summonses.

The date you receive at the end of Tzav Rishon is set by date of birth, and it is preliminary: it may change, among other things according to the role you are assigned to. The rule — the older enlist before the younger, in line with the assignment and the training dates.

The enlistment order and the assignment notice are sent about a month and a half before enlistment.

A request to postpone or bring forward enlistment, or to enlist at a different recruitment office, is submitted to the service center of the Meitav unit before the enlistment date. How to apply — on the questions and answers page of the mitgaisim.idf.il site.

Traveling abroad before enlistment? You may not study or work there, and you may not stay abroad for more than three months — whoever wants to extend arranges their status at the nearest consulate. Until when you have to return — the official pages give different numbers, so check with the Meitav service center.

## The Stars card

About two weeks before enlistment an SMS arrives with a link to the “Stars” card (Cohavim) — the digital shopping card of IDF soldiers. Before enlistment it holds 215 stars.

With them you buy personal equipment for service — a towel, socks, T-shirts, underwear — and also winter gear, and combatants also sports gear. The chains: Hamashbir Lazarchan, Gali, Delta, Mega Sport, Columbia, Ricochet and H&O.

Combatants and combat-support soldiers receive more stars — a month after enlistment and a year after it, combatants more. The uniform is not bought: you receive it at Logistics.

## What to bring

Documents — mandatory:

- A valid ID: a teudat zehut (ID card), a driver's license or an Israeli passport.

- Bank account details: bank name, branch number and account number. You don't have an account — one of your parents' will do.

The enlistment order — if you have it, take it; whoever lost it goes in with a valid ID. Also bring a valid vaccination booklet, and medical documents if you have any — they are presented on enlistment day.

In the bag — for two weeks:

- Changes of clothes for at least two weeks, underwear, pajamas and sneakers.

- Warm clothes: a coat, gloves, a scarf.

- A wristwatch — preferably digital, with a stopwatch and a light.

- Regular medication (and an inhaler if needed) and an allergy syringe if you carry one — a supply for at least a month.

- Glasses and a cleaning spray; contact lenses are also allowed.

- A toiletry bag: shampoo, soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste, flip-flops, sunscreen.

- Bedding: a sheet, a pillow, a pillowcase, a blanket.

- A flashlight and batteries, a black non-erasable marker.

- A charged phone, a charger and a little money.

- A sandwich or a small snack and a bottle of water — it is a long day.

- Girls — black hair ties.

What to leave at home:

- Tank tops and shorts above the knee — forbidden on the base.

- A smartwatch, a laptop and expensive devices — there probably won't be anywhere to keep them. If possible, bring an old phone.

- Jewelry — it is taken off on enlistment day and at firing ranges.

- Lunchboxes from home — they can stay home: there is lunch, and the “Yoter” gift has snacks.

A small bag is better than a big one: on enlistment day you receive a large equipment bag, and everything is moved into it. And whatever you forgot — you make up at home after the first week or two.

## The morning: from the recruitment office to Bakum

In the morning you report to the recruitment office (Lishkat Giyus) or to an “enlistment site” — another place, besides the office, from which the recruits board the buses; the summons can be to either of them. You say goodbye to those who came with you, and after a short registration you travel by bus to Bakum — the reception and classification base at Tel HaShomer.

There you meet the first commanding figure in the service — the recruits' commander, who will accompany you throughout the day. You leave your bag and personal belongings, receive a sheet of stickers that marks the stations, and begin the Sharsheret Hiyul, the enlistment sequence.

## The rules in the sequence

In the area of the enlistment sequence — and the commanders enforce this:

- You do not enter with food or drink.

- Smoking is forbidden.

- Using a phone is forbidden: it stays in the personal bag, according to the commanders' briefing.

- Personal equipment is not brought in.

The stations don't go in a fixed order — the sheet of stickers marks the way; the last one is always Logistics.

Whoever has been growing a full, thick beard for a long time can receive on enlistment day, after a check in the enlistment sequence, a temporary permit for one month only.

Some lists of the stations also include a barber — a haircut according to army orders, and the religious markers in the hair stay; the IDF site's list has no such station.

On the Haredi tracks the sequence is run by men only, there is time for the Minha and Maariv prayers with a minyan, and the meal is strictly kosher (mehadrin).

## Station 1 · Oral and dental X-ray

Imaging of the oral cavity and teeth, for identification in an emergency. Takes a few minutes. Arrive at this station without watches, bracelets, rings or earrings.

## Station 2 · Vaccinations and DNA sample

The station has two parts. First a prick in one of the fingers: the blood is placed on special paper, and a DNA sample is taken from it. Then vaccinations according to the type of service — tetanus and meningitis, and for those who enlist in winter, flu as well.

Vaccinations are not mandatory. You come with a valid vaccination booklet. Whoever was vaccinated in the past year tells the medics; whoever was vaccinated privately brings a document attesting to it — a vaccination booklet or another one.

## Station 3 · Face and profile photo

The picture that will appear on the Hoger — the soldier's ID that stays with you throughout your service. You are photographed only once. No hat and no sunglasses, and hair tied up.

## Station 4 · Fingerprints

Fingerprints are scanned with a special device, for certain identification when needed. Short and painless — under two minutes. No watches, bracelets or rings.

## Station 5 · Bone marrow donation

A voluntary station. Whoever is willing to donate bone marrow, if there is ever a need, fills in a short medical questionnaire and gives a saliva sample — and that's all. The sample is meant to save the lives of cancer patients.

## Station 6 · Data verification

You sit opposite a soldier who enters your personal details: full name, phone, address, family. Here you sign four forms and give the bank account details — bank name, branch number and account number — to which the military salary will be transferred.

It is best to enter the details in advance on mitgaisim.idf.il. Didn't manage to? Write them on a sheet of paper and bring it with you into the sequence.

## Station 7 · Hoger and dog tag

You receive the Hoger — the soldier's ID, with the photo, personal number, enlistment date and discharge date — and with it a booklet for the case of capture (פנקס שבי) and dog tags. The dog tag is worn the whole time you wear a uniform.

## Station 8 · Lunch

An organized break between the stations: the first meal in a military dining hall. Some of the recruits will also end up on kitchen duty.

## Station 9 · Assignment officer

A personal conversation with an officer. Every recruit meets an assignment officer (katzin miyun), assigned or not. Whoever hasn't yet received a role is assigned here. Whoever has already been assigned can try to change the assignment, but there is no way to know whether the request will be accepted.

The officer also tells about basic training and about the service that awaits you. You come to the station with the stickers you received at the start of the day.

## Station 10 · Logistics

The last station — always. You walk in wearing your clothes from home and walk out in full uniform. You receive a large personal equipment bag with what the army provides: the Class A uniform (Madei Alef), shoes, a belt, a beret, a coat and more.

## Station 11 · A gift from the “Yoter” club

At the end of the process a gift kit from the “Yoter” club of the Association for the Wellbeing of Israel's Soldiers awaits: snacks, hygiene products, Turkish coffee and more. The contents change from time to time.

## End of the day: on the way to the basic training base (Batar)

You leave Logistics in uniform, with the large bag, and board the bus to the basic training base — Batar. At the base you meet the basic training command staff, find out who is in your team and who is in your room, and fill in intake questionnaires — for example the Tash (soldier welfare) questionnaire and a medical questionnaire.

At the end of the day there is a “Tash” hour — “pre-sleep”, time with no schedule: to shower, talk to the family and get ready for sleep.
