What you study
The department's faculty will teach you how to analyze works of painting, sculpture, and architecture and develop critical thinking and a professional “eye.” Theoretical and practical courses, museum visits, and various workshops create a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience. We not only broaden horizons, but also create a journey to the heart of human expression by deciphering the visual language of works of art, analyzing compositions, and understanding artistic techniques.
The studies provide extensive knowledge of the history and philosophy of art across different periods and cultures, from prehistoric times to the present day. Students develop skills in analyzing, understanding, and evaluating works of art, as well as learn a range of research methods for analyzing and interpreting works of art in their historical and cultural contexts. The curriculum touches on many fields and usually focuses on 4 major periods: antiquity and the classical period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and modern and contemporary art. Courses in the degree include Introduction to Greek Art, The Formation of Islamic Art, 19th-Century Art, Introduction to Hellenistic and Roman Art, Portraits in the Greek, Roman, and Early Christian Worlds, and more.
