What you study

Hebrew literature is the foundation of Jewish and Israeli life, from “In the beginning God created” to “A Glitch at the Edge of the Galaxy.” It is written in Israel and around the world, in different cultural contexts, and is distinguished by its richness, diversity, and rare beauty.

The studies provide a foundation for exploring and gaining a deeper understanding of the diverse forms of Hebrew literary creation, including genres such as prose, drama, and poetry, as well as literary movements and periods. They also equip students with tools for critiquing and evaluating literary works and phenomena. The curriculum covers outstanding works in Hebrew, from the period of Midrash and the literature of the Sages to modern Hebrew literature today. Courses in the degree include: Narrative Theory, Introduction to Modern Hebrew Literature: Poetry and Prose, Introduction to Temple Literature and Aggadah, The Golden Age: Keys to the Poetry of Spain, The Beginnings of Hebrew Poetry: A Journey into the First Millennium, Hebrew Poets in the Muslim World, Introduction to Modern Hebrew Literature in the Twentieth Century, and more.
