What you would be doing
You work on mechanics in an advanced research environment, in some of the country's — and the world's — most sophisticated labs, tackling technological challenges alongside high-school graduates, technicians and engineers, in a style close to global hi-tech. It suits people with a technical bent, mechanical understanding, teamwork skills, self-study ability and creative thinking. The experience helps graduates move into the hi-tech industry afterward.
What it takes to get in
Dapar 60 and above, a full matriculation certificate including 5 units of physics or robotics (mechatronics), mathematics and English. Requires signing on for 12 months of career service (keva), plus completing mandatory service to 32 months for women.
Training
A roughly three-and-a-half-month foundation course combining theory and practice, followed by about a year of further training with personal mentoring in the unit.
Where you serve
The foundation course runs at a closed base in central Israel. Afterward the work varies — office, workshop and field work — usually on an open base, though overnight stays are sometimes required.
What it is worth afterwards
The experience gained in service helps graduates move into the hi-tech industry.
