What you study

At Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, it is a young and dynamic department that offers an approach that differs considerably from those commonly found in academic art departments. This is reflected in its extensive focus on visual culture, interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives, and a special emphasis on topics that offer applications for directly engaging with the artistic “reality” of the modern cultural environment, in the context of contemporary art in general and Israeli art in particular.

The studies focus on viewing works of art from a broad perspective that connects different art forms, culture, and society, and offer a humanistic, intellectual, sociological, and philosophical framework for the study of art and culture. The curriculum introduces students to all fields of art: painting, sculpture, photography, video, architecture, music, performance, performing arts, dance and theater, film, television, and digital media. It provides historical and theoretical knowledge, an in-depth look at key trends and creators in Israel and around the world, and an introduction to tools for criticism and research.
