What you study

Studying Arabic and Islam opens the door to a wide range of careers in many fields. A deep command of the Arabic language and familiarity with its history, culture, society, and religion make it possible to work in key professional fields: research and academia, translation and editing, journalism and communications, education and teaching, work in social and international organizations, diplomacy and public service, the security sector, cultural and business consulting, and policy research and strategic thinking.

The studies provide extensive knowledge of the Arabic language, both theoretical and practical, across its different forms: classical, literary, modern, and spoken Arabic. They also provide knowledge of literature written in Arabic and of Arab culture. Courses in the degree include language and linguistics courses: Arabic and the Semitic languages, Arabic grammar through modern and classical approaches, and the dialects spoken in the East and West; as well as literature courses: classical Arabic literature, in both prose and poetry, modern Arabic literature, theories of translation, the history of Muslim thought, and polemical literature.
