What you study

The Department of Arabic Language and Literature is the oldest in the country and has an international reputation. Here you can gain theoretical and practical knowledge of all aspects of the Arabic language—classical and modern, literary and spoken—and also become familiar with Judeo-Arabic from the Middle Ages to the modern era.

The studies provide extensive knowledge of the Arabic language, both theoretical and practical, across its different forms: classical, literary, modern, and spoken Arabic. They also provide knowledge of literature written in Arabic and of Arab culture. Courses in the degree include language and linguistics courses: Arabic and the Semitic languages, Arabic grammar through modern and classical approaches, and the dialects spoken in the East and West; as well as literature courses: classical Arabic literature, in both prose and poetry, modern Arabic literature, theories of translation, the history of Muslim thought, and polemical literature.
