What you study
It deals with the development and production of all the products we know—from airplanes, skyscrapers, and bridges to the chips found in computers and cell phones, medical implants, and more. A product’s performance and reliability are determined by the properties of the materials it is made from. Whether a material is chosen for its mechanical strength, its ability to conduct or insulate electricity or heat, and/or its resistance to environmental conditions, the choice is always based on the material’s properties.
Materials engineering deals with the relationship between the structure and composition of a material and its properties, combining knowledge from engineering and science. This is a broad field that covers both the planning and production stages of a product and the study of the different materials it is made of from chemical, physical, and biological perspectives. Courses in the degree include basic courses in mathematics and science, as well as courses such as material structure, thermodynamics and kinetics, mechanical, electrical, optical, and electrochemical properties, metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and electronic materials, and a practical final project.
